Last chance to see and discuss Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America Through Galveston
As the exhibit Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America Through Galveston comes to a close, the Museum will co-host a panel discussion about the show’s impact at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 31, in the Oak Room.
Titled “Still Forgotten?” the panel will feature Austin anthropologist Dr. Suzanne Seriff, the show’s original curator. Also on board are filmmakers Cynthia and Allen Mondell, whose 1983 documentary, “West of Hester Street,” was the first endeavor to bring the port’s immigration history to public attention. The panelists will describe the dearth of resources available when they embarked on their research, the descendants they interviewed from Texas to Minnesota, and spin-offs from their work.
Texas historian Hollace Weiner will moderate the panel and introduce local residents whose ancestors came to America through Galveston. These descendants will be asked to say a few words about their family history.
The panel is co-sponsored by the Texas Jewish Historical Society which is convening in Fort Worth March 30-April 1 to view the exhibit.
The presentation is free with paid exhibit admission; Museum members are free.
